Cooking with Kids

I am in the process of grooming my sous chef. It’s not child labor if he’s having fun, right?  Well, okay, maybe he’s not ready to take on the caramel apple tarts I’m currently working on, but I can vouch for the fact that this little fella can make a mean peanut butter and raisin rollup.

The fun folks from Kids Kitchen Chefs Club, an online program with monthly lessons meant to teach kids confidence in cooking, hooked us up with the first two months of lessons.  Blaise was all too excited to wield the whisk and spreader like they were samurai swords.

The program walked us through the basics of food safety, perfect hard boiled eggs and spreading peanut butter on toast.  Being fresh out of toast, we improvised with a tortilla and raisins and rolled them up.

I’m fortunate that my kids aren’t picky eaters.  I’m not sure if that’s because I got lucky or if it’s because I expose them to a wide variety of foods.  But, I do know that Blaise loves it when I involve him in cooking and he enthusiastically eats anything he makes himself.  If you’ve got picky eaters you’re trying to coax into being more adventurous, this might be a great way to test the waters.  Or, if you’ve got a kid who’s hooked on Food Network and wants to be on MasterChef Kids, Kids Kitchen Chefs Club provides a helpful foundation of beginner culinary education.  Ultimately, the best part was spending time with my little goofball and sharing my love of cooking with him.
