This Turkey Bacon Avocado Grilled Cheese Sub sandwich is literally grilled. It’s meant for the outdoor fun of tailgating or fall backyard parties. Super crazy easy, not a ton of ingredients and that fun “wow” factor because it’s larger than life. Everyone loves an over-sized sandwich, right?
Of course, you can change out any of the ingredients based on your tastes. The cheeses are interchangeable. The meat and veggies swappable. For my mix here, I was inspired by the classic combo of turkey, bacon and avocado. I’ve gotten frying bacon down to a delicious art, looking for something crispy, but not burned, just a little bit chewy, but not rubbery. Call me the bacon whipsper…
As for the actual grilling part, I prefer to get a good bit of char going on my bread. When it comes to grilling, I like to prove that real-life fire was involved and left behind some serious singe marks. But, you can go easy on the heat and get a simple roasty toasty going. That said, you do want to keep it on the grill long enough to melt the cheese.
One other important note, simply for logistical purposes, I recommend grilling your sandwich open-faced, then assembling it as a sandwich after you take it off the grill. I put cheese on both sides of the bread and grilling it open-faced ensures the cheese melts to both the top and bottom bread. I never skimp when it comes to cheese.
